Alain Platel named Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres

Alain Platel is designated Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French minister of Culture. The Ordre des Arts et des Lettres distinguishes three degrees: Chevalier, Officier and the highest distinction of Commandeur. Since 1957 these degrees are awarded in France every year as a recognition of significant contributions to the arts or literature in France and abroad.

Alain Platel is director and choreographer. In 1984 he founded in Ghent les ballets C de la B, a dance company that over the years enjoyed great success in Belgium and abroad. In 2001 Alain Platel was already named Chevalier.
 
As Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres Alain Platel joins the company of prominent personalities as Patti Smith, Audrey Hepburn, Bob Dylan, Marcel Marceau, Dalida, Umberto Eco, Nan Goldin, David Bowie, Václav Havel… A few Belgians have also received the honour of Commandeur, amongst them opera manager Gerard Mortier, scenarist Jean Van Hamme, choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, painter Paul Delvaux and opera singer José Van Dam.
